The third annual Tri-State Crab Feast Cruise is coming up on Saturday, August 19th (rain date Sunday, August 27th). It starts at the Winterthur Museum parking lot (6 miles n.w. off I-95 exit 7 on SR52 in Wilmington, DE) and heads west through Northern Delaware estates and Southeastern Pennsylvania mushroom farms, then turns south for lunch and a swim at Elk Neck State Park along the Chesapeake Bay (pack a picnic basket or stop at Troll of Scandanavia to stock up before the drive). After lunch the drive continues east with a stop in historic Chesapeake City, passes by Maryland horse farms, reenters Delaware and heads south on SR9 along the Delaware Bay ending at the Boondocks Restaurant just east of Smyrna for our crab feast.

The route includes every covered bridge in Delaware (two) and three more in Pennsylvania. And, the crabs are great. We hope anyone within reasonable (four-hour) driving distance and able to commandeer a Z3 will join us.

Time: Arrive between 9:30 and 9:45 with a full tank of gas. We’ll leave at 10am sharp.

Bring a Box Lunch: Or call Troll of Scandanavia. It’s located at 5808 Kennett Pike in Centerville, DE, just north of Winterthur on SR52. Their phone number is 302-429-6288. Box lunches include sandwich (chicken salad, London broil, smoked turkey, smoked salmon, turkey, baked ham) two salads (usually vegetable and potato), cheese and fruit, and dessert. Sandwiches can be ordered on white bread or roll, multigrain, pumpernickel and croissant. Cost is $10 each ($12 for smoked salmon) and must be ordered by Friday, AM. Highly recommended. Pick up your order Saturday morning at 9:30 so we can start on time.

Swimming Hole: Chesapeake Bay – Elk Neck State Park, Maryland. Bring swim suit, towels and inflatable beach toys if you’d like to get wet (at least one person from each car must get in at least up to their knees this year). This is also our lunch stop (with picnic tables and first class indoor plumbing including showers).

Chesapeake City: Our early afternoon stop is on the National Historic Registry, as well as Maryland's Historic Registry. The town has many restored historic homes, shops, and galleries featuring hand-painted originals and prints, antiques, collectibles, clothing, gifts and crafts. We’ll stop for exploring, ice cream cones, watching traffic along the canal, and picking out a nice bed & breakfast for a return visit.

Crab Feast: The Boondocks, Smryna, Delaware. Fantastic crabs and plenty of other choices for non-crab lovers.

Lodging: If you’d like to arrive on Friday, the Mendenhall Inn is less than four miles north of Winterthur on Route 52 in Mendenhall, PA. The Inn’s number is 610-388-2100. If you'd like suggestions for less expensive lodging, please E-Mail me.

Check out the Tri-State Crab Feast web page. And, please E-Mail Tom at tommost@erols.com to express your interest and receive further info as it becomes available.

This is one of my favorite cruises. Don’t miss it! See y’all on the 19th!
