Bruce posted a message for Z3 owners, saying that low water is the #1 reason for battery failure. Although there is no question, that battery water levels on accessible batteries (such as the one in the Z3) should be maintained, this is not the #1 reason for battery failures. We are the manufacturer of these batteries and our data suggests that lack of battery maintenance in general is the main reason for failure. If you want your battery to last, make sure that you charge your battery in the following situations:
1) Storage for extended periods of time (winter storage). It also helps to disconnect the battery while storing the car.
2) If the car is started several times a day but not driven very far. We recommend that you drive at least 100 miles per month or help the battery with an occasional trickle charge.
3) In extreme hot weather (desert Southwest) the water actually can evaporate from the battery. Be sure to check battery water levels after every summer.
4) Excessive draw caused by aftermarket users such as alarms, stereos, lights, etc. The battery will discharge more rapidly if those users stay on while the car is not in operation.
With respect to technology, the 99 model Z3 has a maintenance free battery (Calcium technology) with a magic eye (integrated hydrometer). The chemical water consumption of those batteries is lower than on the previous batteries (hybrid technology). This battery is now available in the aftermarket. All BMW batteries are vented (not sealed). However, we comply with a tilt-angle optimization spec which reduces the danger of leakage from the battery, even when turned on its side or upside down.
Please feel free to contact us anytime for questions regarding your Z3 battery.
