I recently spoke with the Service Manager at my dealership and was told that BMW is redesigning the radio due to numerous problems including batteries draining dead...
He did not provide a timing on when the new radios will be available...apparently all the problems surfaced when they changed vendors and suppossedly they are going back to more reliable vendors.
There is no connection with the DSP System...by the way.
Also, since the AM listeners are a "minority", BMW has taken a long time to address this issue.
I have owned 15 BMW's and this is the first bad AM radio that I have experienced.
Also, of course, the speakers in my DSP system
$ 1200 option are bad news and the subwoofer is so boomy...
At a minimum to compensate for the inconvenience, BMW should upgrade all of us to the XM radio when it becomes available if it is retrofitable in the 2000 and 2001 X5's...wishful thinking??
If you are one of those unhappy customers, you may want to keep inquiring at the Service Department to make sure that they know there are a lot of unhappy stereo system owners...

Year and a half on my 4.4, and the dealer just can't fix the AM radio. Reception is decent only in very strong signal areas. In moderate reception areas where my other car's AM works fine, and all my BMW loaners work just fine, the AM in my X5 is awful to entirely unusable: just lots of hash and "screeeeeeeeee." All of the availabe fixed were presumably tried. Anyone have such a problem actually solved? Or any creative thoughts?
