Brake dust seems to be proportional to braking ability. Vehicles with better stopping ability seem to generate the most because they use softer compounds for their pads.

If the wheels are cleaned regularly and waxed with a hard wax (I use Sonax's Motorcycle wax for the wheels) it will only be marginally more difficult to clean the wheels than the rest of the vehicle. (Remember, wheels are just another painted surface; they're just subject to a lot more abuse by virtue of their location.)

If you do skip a wash every now and then (heh heh) you might consider using P21S wheel wash. This product comes in two forms (regular and gel) and is sprayed onto a cool, dry wheel to work. Needs little or no agitation with a soft rag and is simply rinsed clean. Safe for the wheels. I have used this on all my vehicles for about 10 years with only excellent results.

I get these products from Larry McReynolds (sp?) at http://www.carcareonline.com . Larry is widely regarded as *the* expert on these matters and frequently judges concours events, etc. He also has this responsibility for the Porsche Club. Visiting his site is an education in car care.

Hope this helps.
